Bear Country USA offers a very different Black Hills experience from monuments, historic towns and scenic overlooks. Located near Rapid City, the wildlife park is best known for a drive-through route where visitors can see black bears and other North American animals from their vehicles.
A safari-style drive
The main experience takes place from inside your car. You follow the park route through large enclosures while observing animals in the surrounding landscape. Black bears are the stars, but the park is home to a wider collection of North American wildlife.
Because you are travelling through areas containing large animals, follow all park rules carefully. Keep vehicle windows and doors secured where instructed and never attempt to feed or approach the animals.
More than the driving route
After the drive, visitors can explore a separate walking area that provides opportunities to see additional animals at closer range. This makes Bear Country USA particularly easy to include in a family itinerary.
Combine it with Rapid City and the Black Hills
The location makes the park a convenient stop when travelling between Rapid City and the major attractions of the southern Black Hills. It can fit naturally into a trip that also includes Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park or Crazy Horse Memorial.
I would allow enough time that the visit does not become another rushed roadside stop. Animal activity can vary with weather and time of day, so no two drives are exactly the same.
Opening periods, admission details and visitor rules can change seasonally, so check Bear Country USA’s current information before setting out.
