From famous American landmarks to spectacular national parks, discover some of South Dakota’s most memorable attractions.
South Dakota is a wonderful destination for travellers who enjoy outdoor adventures, fascinating history and scenic road trips.
Many of the state’s best-known attractions are located in the western part of South Dakota, making it possible to combine several memorable experiences during a single holiday.
Here are some places I would recommend including in your itinerary.
Visit Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore National Memorial is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the United States.
The enormous sculptures of four American presidents are carved into the granite mountainside in the Black Hills.
Visit the observation areas, explore the walking trails and learn more about the monument’s history at the visitor facilities.
Explore Badlands National Park
Badlands National Park is famous for its dramatic rock formations, colourful geological layers and open grasslands.
Drive along Badlands Loop Road, stop at the viewpoints and keep an eye out for wildlife such as bison and bighorn sheep.
Sunrise and sunset are particularly beautiful times to experience the landscape.
Discover Custer State Park
If you enjoy wildlife and scenic drives, Custer State Park is well worth visiting.
The park is home to a large bison herd, and its scenic roads take you through forests, mountains and open grasslands.
The Needles Highway is particularly memorable, with narrow tunnels and impressive granite formations.
Visit Historic Deadwood
Deadwood offers a fascinating glimpse into the American gold rush era.
Walk along the historic streets, explore local museums and discover stories about the people who helped shape the town’s colourful past.
Experience Sioux Falls
In eastern South Dakota, Sioux Falls offers a pleasant contrast to the state’s mountain and prairie landscapes.
Visit Falls Park to see the waterfalls on the Big Sioux River, then explore the city’s restaurants, shops and downtown attractions.
If you have time, I recommend combining the Black Hills, Badlands National Park and Custer State Park for a memorable South Dakota road trip.
